In the late summer of 2015, a young man's life was tragically cut short in Murray, Kentucky. Jamel Ahmed Al-Shubili, an 18-year-old male of Middle Eastern/Arab descent, was fatally shot on the evening of September 9, 2015. A recent graduate of Mayfield High School, where he had served as class president, Al-Shubili had plans to transfer to Murray State University to study photojournalism. Friends remembered him as a positive and dedicated student who could brighten anyone's day.
The incident occurred at a friend's duplex on Stadium View Drive around 8:00 p.m. Al-Shubili was with his friend, 21-year-old Tearron Sherrill of Mayfield, when the shooting happened. Witnesses reported that prior to the fatal shot, Sherrill had been handling a firearm while 'rapping' to music, clicking the gun's hammer back and forth to the rhythm. At some point, the gun discharged, and a single bullet struck Al-Shubili in the chest.
When police officers arrived at the scene at 8:22 p.m., they found a chaotic situation with several people screaming. Al-Shubili was bleeding in the driveway near a car, with a blood-covered Sherrill beside him. Witnesses stated they heard a gunshot and ran downstairs to see Sherrill holding his wounded friend and yelling that he had been shot. Sherrill was attempting to get Al-Shubili into a car, presumably to take him to the hospital. Al-Shubili was pronounced dead later that evening.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Tearron Sherrill was arrested and initially faced a charge of second-degree manslaughter. This charge was briefly upgraded to murder on September 11, 2015, by the Calloway County Attorney's Office. However, following a preliminary hearing on September 18, 2015, the charge was reduced back to second-degree manslaughter, and Sherrill's bond was set at $50,000. He was also charged with tampering with evidence, as officers noted that the gun initially seen on a couch disappeared shortly after Sherrill went downstairs. Jamel Al-Shubili was laid to rest in Maplewood Cemetery in Mayfield.
