In the quiet town of Bardstown, Kentucky, the life of 17-year-old Cameron Wess Williamson was cut tragically short on Monday, May 15, 2017. A student at Bardstown High School, Williamson was known for his love of basketball and rapping. In what authorities would later describe as a botched drug deal, the young man was fatally shot in the chest.
The events leading to his death began to unfold in the early hours of that Monday morning.
Williamson had reportedly connected with 18-year-old Damion Murphy and 19-year-old Alexis Gribbins through the social media platform Instagram to arrange the purchase of marijuana. Murphy and Gribbins picked Williamson up from his home and drove to a parking lot situated behind a row of businesses off Stephen Foster Avenue.
It was there that the situation turned violent. Two other individuals, 21-year-old Shelmontay Adams and 19-year-old Torique Griffin, were also present and attempted to rob Williamson. During the confrontation, Adams allegedly opened the car door and fired a single shot, striking Williamson in the chest. In the aftermath of the shooting, Murphy and Gribbins drove Williamson to a nearby Five Star gas station. It was there that he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting moved swiftly, and within 12 hours of the incident, all four individuals allegedly involved were apprehended by the Bardstown Police. Shelmontay Adams was charged with murder and first-degree robbery. Damion Murphy, Alexis Gribbins, and Torique Griffin each faced charges of complicity to murder and complicity to robbery. A judge set their bonds at $1 million cash each, deeming them a danger to the community. By 2019, all four defendants had entered pleas to charges related to the robbery and murder of Cameron Williamson. The senseless act of violence sent shockwaves through the Bardstown community, which came together to mourn the loss of a young life taken too soon.
