In the early morning hours of a Saturday in Bardstown, Kentucky, the quiet of West Stephen Foster Avenue was shattered by violence. On June 4, 2016, police were called to the scene to find 61-year-old Michael Wayne Unseld, a male resident of the community, deceased. He had sustained what appeared to be a fatal gunshot wound. An autopsy was ordered to determine the precise cause of his death.
For years, the case remained an active investigation, with law enforcement seeking information
from the public to bring closure to the unsettling murder. The Bardstown Police Department continued to pursue leads, hoping for a break that would lead to an arrest. The community was left to wonder who was responsible for the death of Mr. Unseld and if they would ever be brought to justice.
Then, in August of 2019, more than three years after the incident, a significant development occurred. Bardstown Police made an arrest in connection with the 2016 murder. Twenty-six-year-old Robert Tate was taken into custody on West Stephen Foster Avenue, the very same street where Michael Unseld had lost his life. Tate was subsequently charged with one count of murder and was held in the Nelson County Jail.
