Preston Ryan Cope, a 15-year-old from Benton, Kentucky, tragically died on January 23, 2018, as a result of a school shooting at Marshall County High School. Preston was a sophomore at the school and was known for his involvement in the Marshall County Baseball Team and the Future Christian Athletes Club. On that fateful day, a 15-year-old student opened fire in the school's crowded atrium, resulting in the deaths of Preston and another student, Bailey Nicole Holt, and injuring 17 others.
