On a cold Tuesday morning in January, the community of Benton, Kentucky, was irrevocably shattered by a senseless act of violence that claimed the life of 15-year-old Preston Ryan Cope. It was January 23, 2018, when a fellow student, also 15, opened fire in the commons area of Marshall County High School as students were gathering before the start of the school day. In the ensuing chaos, Preston was struck by a non-survivable gunshot wound to the head.
He was airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, but tragically succumbed to his injuries. Another student, 15-year-old Bailey Nicole Holt, also lost her life in the attack.
Preston was a beloved member of the community, known for his love of baseball and his active participation in the Marshall County High School baseball team and the Future Christian Athletes Club. Friends remembered him as an incredible kid who was always smiling and never had a negative word to say. His parents, Brian and Teresa Cope, rushed to the school upon hearing of the shooting and were able to be by his side in his final moments, a harrowing experience his father later recounted. The loss of Preston and Bailey sent shockwaves through the small town, leaving a wound that friends and family said would never fully heal.
The shooter, identified as Gabriel Ross Parker, was taken into custody by the Marshall County Sheriff at the scene. Witnesses described him as having 'lifeless' eyes and said he was silent as he fired upon his classmates. Before the shooting, he had reportedly gone to the school's band room to ensure his friends were not in the area. Parker was charged with two counts of murder and multiple counts of assault. Prosecutors announced their intention to try him as an adult. The motive for the devastating attack remained unclear in the immediate aftermath, leaving a community to grapple with the profound loss of two of its own.
