investigation into her death quickly focused on a suspect close to home: her 38-year-old son, Gavin Perkins. He was arrested and subsequently charged with the murder of his mother, having been accused of shooting her multiple times in the apartment they shared. The initial call to 911 was made by Gavin himself around noon on the day of the incident, though police were unable to make contact at that time. It was several hours later, after he approached a mail carrier to call 911 again, that officers entered the residence and discovered the tragic scene.
The legal proceedings that followed took a complex turn. Gavin Perkins was initially charged with murder and domestic violence, and a judge set his bond at $1 million.
