In the summer of 2018, a vibrant young woman's life was tragically cut short in Lexington, Kentucky. Jasmir Allen, a 19-year-old female, was fatally shot on the evening of Sunday, July 29, 2018. The incident occurred around 10:50 p.m. at the Liberty Heights apartment complex on Liberty Road. When police arrived at the scene following reports of shots fired, they discovered Jasmir with a severe upper extremity wound.
She was rushed to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, but tragically succumbed to her injuries at 11:36 p.m.
The investigation into Jasmir's death quickly revealed a complex and volatile situation. It was determined that she was not the intended target of the gunfire. The shooting was the unfortunate culmination of an ongoing dispute between another woman and 20-year-old Montash Jackson. On the night of the incident, Jackson fired several rounds in the direction of the woman with whom she had been arguing, and Jasmir was tragically struck by the gunfire. At the scene, Jackson admitted to the shooting, claiming she had fired in self-defense. She was subsequently arrested and charged with murder and four counts of wanton endangerment.
The legal proceedings that followed painted a picture of a long-standing conflict. Jackson's defense attorney argued that she had been repeatedly 'bullied, harassed, brutalized and physically tormented' by a group of women, which included Jasmir Allen. There was a history of physical altercations between Jackson and the other women, reportedly stemming from a dispute over a mutual romantic interest. Despite the defense's claims of self-defense, the case went to trial. Ultimately, in October 2019, a jury acquitted Montash Jackson of manslaughter in Jasmir Allen's death. Jackson, who had been incarcerated for nearly 18 months, was subsequently released from custody.
