In the final days of February 2019, the life of a young Louisville woman, 21-year-old Tyra Richelle Dear, was tragically cut short. She was inside a home in the Valley Station neighborhood when a dispute escalated with deadly consequences. On February 28, a man named Austin Tudor allegedly placed a gun against her shoulder and threatened to shoot her. Witnesses reported that Dear challenged him to follow through on his threat, at which point she was shot.
She was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries and passed away on March 1, 2019.
Following the shooting, Louisville Metro Police arrested Tudor, who was 25 years old at the time. He provided investigators with a different account of the events, claiming that Dear was shot accidentally as she tried to grab the firearm from him. Despite his statement, he was charged with her murder. The promising life of a young woman, remembered by loved ones as someone who was always helpful and never met a stranger, was over. Her family and friends were left to grieve the sudden and violent loss.
The legal proceedings took an unexpected turn in January 2020 when Tudor was granted a release from jail and placed on the home incarceration program while awaiting trial. This decision caused distress for Dear's family, who believed he should have remained in custody. Their fears were realized when, just over a month later, Tudor was arrested again on new charges. He was accused of assaulting and strangling his new girlfriend on February 27, 2020. This subsequent arrest brought renewed pain to Tyra Dear's family, who continued to advocate for justice in her name, appalled that the man accused of taking her life had been allowed back into the community.
