James Prater was born in Hazard, Kentucky on June 2, 1978. He was preceded in death by a son, Nathial James Prater. At the time of his death, he was survived by his parents, Dial and Sheila Prater, and his brother, Michael Prater. Funeral services were held on Thursday, October 3, 2019, at the Deaton Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in Jackson Cemetery. The case proceeded through the legal system with the father being charged in his son's murder.
