In the winter of 2019, the city of Louisville, Kentucky, was struck by a senseless act of violence that claimed the life of a young business owner. James Mentee, a 27-year-old Black male, was fatally shot on December 20, 2019. The incident that led to his untimely death unfolded at his own establishment, Retta's Lounge, a hookah bar in the Shively neighborhood.
On that Friday night, an altercation occurred within the lounge involving a patron named Lance Bowman.
Following the dispute, Bowman was escorted out of the establishment by security. However, the situation escalated dramatically when Bowman returned a short time later, this time armed with a handgun. Surveillance footage from outside the lounge captured the tragic moments that followed. Bowman confronted Mentee at the entrance, and after a brief struggle, he fired his weapon, striking the young entrepreneur.
The sound of the gunshot prompted a swift response from a security guard at the lounge, who returned fire and wounded Bowman in the foot as he attempted to flee the scene. Despite his injury, Bowman managed to run a short distance before being apprehended by officers from the Shively Police and Louisville Metro Police departments who had been called to the scene. Tragically, James Mentee succumbed to his injuries.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Lance Bowman was arrested and faced a series of serious charges, including murder, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, and tampering with physical evidence. The legal proceedings against him culminated in a jury finding him guilty on all counts. In January 2023, Bowman was sentenced to 50 years in prison for the murder of James Mentee, bringing a measure of judicial closure to a case that had deeply affected the Louisville community and left a family grieving the loss of a beloved son, father, and fiancé.
