In a tragic event that unfolded in Ohio County, Kentucky, 66-year-old Calvin Luther Leisure, Jr., a United States Air Force and National Guard veteran, was found dead from gunshot wounds outside a residence in the McHenry community. The discovery was made on the afternoon of May 19, 2021, when law enforcement responded to a report of shootings. Alongside Mr. Leisure, authorities also found the bodies of his 44-year-old daughter, Nora J. Owings, and his 20-year-old grandson, Hunter L.
Owings, both of whom had also been fatally shot.
As investigators processed the scene, their attention was drawn to a nearby building that was engulfed in flames. After the Beaver Dam Fire Department extinguished the fire, a fourth body was discovered within the charred remains of the structure. The fourth individual was identified as 38-year-old Calvin Leisure III, the son of Calvin Leisure, Jr. It is believed that he also sustained a gunshot wound, though the fire made a definitive determination difficult.
Kentucky State Police have stated that the investigation points towards a probable murder-suicide. Detectives believe that Calvin Leisure III shot and killed his father, sister, and nephew before taking his own life. While a final determination is pending, the evidence gathered at the scene strongly supports this theory. A motive for the devastating familicide has not yet been determined, and authorities have acknowledged that the reason behind the tragic events may never be fully known.
