In the early morning hours of Friday, June 4, 2021, the life of 17-year-old LaMaurie Maurie Trayion Gathings, a Black male from Louisville, Kentucky, was tragically cut short. Just before 3:45 a.m., Louisville Metro Police responded to a call and discovered a vehicle on Old Park Boulevard, near Crittenden Drive. Inside, they found Gathings and two other individuals had been shot.
While the other two victims were transported to the University of Louisville Hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, Gathings was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators believe the shooting that claimed LaMaurie's life did not occur where the vehicle was found. It is thought that the victims were shot at a different location and then drove to Old Park Road. This detail added a layer of complexity to the investigation, as authorities worked to piece together the events leading up to the fatal shooting. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office officially identified LaMaurie as the deceased individual, and his death was classified as a homicide.
Known affectionately as 'Maurie,' he was a young man with a promising future and a beloved member of his community. He was a student, just one year away from graduating high school. He had a passion for football, having played for the Tenth Street Cardinals in a youth league before continuing to play at Iroquois and Fairdale High Schools. Beyond his athletic pursuits, LaMaurie was known for his kind and helpful nature. He would often assist his neighbors with yard work, from mowing lawns and raking leaves to shoveling snow. His family remembered his contagious smile and playful personality, noting his love for music and video games.
In the wake of this tragedy, the Louisville Metro Police Department's Homicide Unit opened an investigation and appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the apprehension of those responsible for LaMaurie's death. However, to date, there have been no arrests made in connection with his murder, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The case remains an open and unsolved homicide, leaving his family and community still searching for answers and justice for the loss of a young life full of potential.
