In the early morning hours of August 5, 2021, Jefferson County Sheriff's Deputy Brandon Shirley, a 26-year-old man, was shot and killed while working an off-duty security job at Rockford Lane Auto Sales in Louisville, Kentucky. He was in uniform at the time of the shooting, which occurred around 2:30 a.m. Emergency services transported him to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
At the time, law enforcement officials stated their belief that Deputy Shirley was the victim of a targeted and calculated ambush.
The investigation into his death was a collaborative effort involving the Louisville Metro Police Department, the ATF, and the FBI. A few days after the shooting, investigators released a surveillance image of a truck they believed could be connected to the murder. The months-long investigation led to a grand jury indictment of two suspects, Jesse Christopher Johnson, who was 28 at the time, and 18-year-old Marquis Mitchell. However, in a surprising turn of events in January 2025, the murder charges against both Johnson and Mitchell were dismissed.
