In the small community of Elkhorn City, Kentucky, a domestic dispute escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 28-year-old Adam Wayne Cantrell on May 23, 2022. Born in nearby Pikeville, Adam's life was cut short in an altercation with his own brother. The events of that day began with a conflict between Adam's older brother, Cody Cantrell, and their father, which resulted in a visible injury to the father's face.
This initial confrontation led to a heated argument between the two
brothers. The dispute took a fatal turn when Cody Cantrell, then 36, shot his younger brother. During the incident, Cody also sustained a gunshot wound to his leg, for which he received medical treatment. Following the shooting, Cody fled the scene but was apprehended by Kentucky State Police shortly after. He was subsequently charged with murder in connection with his brother's death and assault for the altercation with his father.
The legal proceedings that followed saw Cody Cantrell initially facing a murder charge. However, in a development that brought a close to the case, he accepted a plea deal. In February 2024, Cody Cantrell was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to the lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter. Under the terms of his sentence, he is expected to serve at least eight and a half years of his ten-year sentence.
