In a quiet duplex on Montgomery Avenue in Ashland, Kentucky, a heartbreaking discovery was made on June 17, 2022. Selina Easter, a 20-year-old Caucasian woman, and her 18-year-old sister, Summer Algarakhuly, were found lifeless, both having suffered from fatal gunshot wounds. The grim scene was further compounded by the presence of an infant, later identified as Summer's child, who was miraculously unharmed amidst the violence that had claimed the lives of his mother and aunt.
The
investigation into the double homicide quickly pointed to 32-year-old John F. Tooson as the primary suspect. Authorities revealed that Tooson had connections to both Ashland and Toledo, Ohio. Following the killings, Tooson allegedly fled in Selina Easter's vehicle, making his way to Toledo. It was there that law enforcement located him, leading to a tense standoff at a residence. In a dramatic turn of events, as police closed in, Tooson shot himself in an apparent suicide attempt. He survived the self-inflicted gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
After recovering from his injuries, Tooson was extradited back to Kentucky to face the consequences of his alleged actions. He was indicted on a litany of charges, including two counts of murder, first-degree wanton endangerment for leaving the infant at the scene, and theft of an automobile. Prosecutors later upgraded the theft charge to first-degree robbery, alleging that physical force was used against Selina Easter during the car theft. Additionally, Tooson was charged with felony possession of a handgun and faced a persistent felony offender enhancement. As of late 2024, he remained in custody at the Boyd County Detention Center, held without bond while awaiting trial.
