On a tragic Saturday afternoon in Louisville, Kentucky, the life of 24-year-old Alexis McCrary was cut short by gun violence. On September 10, 2022, in the Russell neighborhood, a sequence of events unfolded that would leave two people dead and a family searching for answers. The initial call to police reported a shooting near the 400 block of 26th Street, where they discovered the body of 26-year-old Edward Lamont Smith, who had been fatally shot.
Moments later, another call led officers just a block away to an alley in the 2500 block of Cedar Street. There, they found Alexis McCrary inside a vehicle; she too had been shot and killed.
The Louisville Metro Police Department immediately began an investigation into what they believed to be related shootings. It was later revealed that McCrary and Smith were in a relationship. The family of Alexis, a loving mother of two young sons, was left devastated, describing her as a kind-hearted and caring young woman who lit up every room with her smile. They began a painful journey, grappling with the reality of her sudden and violent death and a future for her children without their mother. Maurice Gibson, 31, was taken into custody and charged with two counts of complicity to murder. Police stated that Gibson admitted to driving the primary murder suspect away from the scene. Subsequently, 31-year-old Paul Wade was arrested and charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of both McCrary and Smith, in addition to being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun. Wade entered a plea of not guilty to the charges. The arrests brought a measure of progress for the grieving families, though the legal proceedings would continue to be a difficult path.
