In the winter of 2022, a dispute between two brothers in London, Kentucky, escalated to a fatal conclusion, leaving one dead and the other facing a murder charge. Grant Smith, a 59-year-old male, was shot and killed on December 2, 2022, at a residence on Old Crab Orchard Road. The tragic event was allegedly the result of an argument with his younger brother, Bailey Smith, who was 56 at the time.
The disagreement, reportedly over stolen property and money, turned violent when Bailey Smith
allegedly shot his brother while he was in the kitchen. Following the shooting, Bailey Smith fled the scene, prompting a search by law enforcement. He was located and arrested without incident the following day at a business off US 25, north of London.
Authorities from the Laurel County Sheriff's Office, assisted by the Kentucky State Police and the London Police Department, conducted the investigation. A significant piece of evidence, the suspected murder weapon, a handgun, was later recovered near the Pittsburg Cemetery, located north of London.
Bailey Smith was subsequently charged with murder and fourth-degree assault. He is being held at the Laurel County Detention Center on a $500,000 bond. His trial is scheduled to take place on March 10, 2025, where the full details of the fraternal dispute that ended in Grant Smith's death are expected to be presented.
