In the winter of 2011, concerns grew when 19-year-old Katherine Marie Pohjonen, a White female, failed to appear for work in Vadnais Heights, Minnesota. A worried co-worker's call to the police on Tuesday, January 25, 2011, led to a grim discovery at the townhouse Katherine shared with her 21-year-old husband, Kalen Pohjonen. Authorities entered the residence to find the young couple deceased.
The Ramsey County Medical Examiner's office later confirmed that both Katherine and Kalen had
died from gunshot wounds. Investigators at the scene recovered a handgun, which was determined to be the weapon used in the tragic incident. The case was officially ruled a murder-suicide, with authorities concluding that Kalen Pohjonen had shot his wife before taking his own life. As the suspect in Katherine's death was also deceased, no arrests were made in the case.
In the days leading up to the discovery, the couple had reportedly been dealing with their car getting stuck in a snowbank. According to court documents, a neighbor who assisted them early on the Saturday morning before they were found noted that Kalen Pohjonen was "extremely intoxicated." This neighbor was likely the last person to see the couple alive. Despite the investigation, a clear motive for the murder-suicide was never established, and authorities found no note left behind to explain the devastating events that transpired. Kalen, a member of the Minnesota National Guard, was scheduled for deployment in the coming months.
