On a summer afternoon in Mendota Heights, Minnesota, a dedicated police officer, Scott Thomas Patrick, a 47-year-old Caucasian male, began what he likely anticipated would be a routine traffic stop on July 30, 2014. An officer with 19 years of service, he was the most senior member of the Mendota Heights Police Department. As he stood beside his patrol car at the intersection of Dodd Road and Smith Avenue, the situation escalated with shocking suddenness.
The driver of the vehicle fired multiple shots, striking Officer Patrick in the head. He was rushed to Regions Hospital, but his wounds proved to be fatal.
The shooting triggered a massive manhunt for the suspect. Several hours later, in the North End of St. Paul, officers located and closed in on a vehicle carrying the man they believed to be responsible. A confrontation ensued, and more gunfire was exchanged. The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Brian George Fitch Sr., was wounded during the shootout with police and subsequently taken into custody. A female companion in the vehicle with Fitch was also injured. Authorities later revealed that Fitch had a lengthy criminal history.
In the wake of the tragedy, the community mourned the loss of a man described as a devoted family man who cared deeply for the residents he served. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters. The outpouring of grief was immense, with thousands of law enforcement officers and community members attending his funeral to pay their respects. Brian Fitch Sr. was later charged with first-degree murder in the death of Officer Patrick. In February 2015, a jury found him guilty, and he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
