A young man is shot and killed while walking less than a mile away from his home Devinn Madley, a 20-year-old Black man from Maplewood, Minnesota, was killed on the night of August 28, 2021, after an ordinary evening ended in sudden violence. He had been out celebrating a friend’s birthday, then returned to his mother’s apartment. Later, he stepped back outside for a quick walk to a nearby shop, moving along Larpenteur Avenue East in the late-night quiet, the kind of short trip that usually leaves no mark on anyone’s memory—except this time, it did.

Police say he was shot while he was walking near the area of Larpenteur Avenue East and McKnight Road. When officers arrived, they found him down on the roadway, and the scene quickly hardened into a homicide investigation—tape, flashing lights, the shocked stillness that follows gunfire. Investigators later shared that they believed shots were fired from a silver or gray SUV, suggesting an attack that came fast and from the street, leaving him little chance to react or get away. 
In the weeks that followed, his family pressed for answers, describing a young man they felt was taken for no reason at all. A reward was offered to push tips forward, and Maplewood police publicly indicated they believed multiple people may have been involved, a detail that only deepened the sense that someone out there knew what happened and who was responsible.
