On the evening of October 18, 2015, Sarah Wierstad, a 24-year-old Caucasian female, was tragically killed just steps from her home in Saint Paul, Minnesota. The young mother was returning from one of her two jobs, pursuing her dream of becoming a chef by attending culinary school, when she unknowingly walked into a burglary in progress at her East Side apartment.
This fateful interruption set off a chain of events that would end her life and launch a complex investigation into a night of widespread, violent crime.
When Sarah entered her home, she discovered at least two men, Albert McIntosh and Alvin Bell, ransacking her apartment while a third, Isiah Harper, acted as a lookout. The intruders, who had chosen her home at random, confronted her at gunpoint, forcing her to the ground and stealing her purse. Despite their warnings to stay put as they fled, Sarah followed them outside. Her primary concern was her five-year-old daughter, who was on her way to the home. She pleaded with the men for the return of her phone. One of the suspects reportedly yelled, "Stay back. Stop following us," before multiple gunshots rang out in the quiet neighborhood. Sarah was struck twice; one bullet hit her foot, and a second, fatal shot traveled through her arm and into her heart. Neighbors rushed to her aid, using a blanket to apply pressure to her chest wound, but she was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The investigation soon revealed that Sarah’s murder was the beginning of a violent, three-hour crime spree by the suspects. Shortly after the shooting, her credit card was used at a gas station in Minneapolis. The group went on to commit another robbery and a second homicide later that same night. The subsequent police work led to the arrests of four individuals.
