In the early hours of March 24, 2018, a celebration aboard a party bus in Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, ended in tragedy, claiming the life of 19-year-old Billy Ray Robles, a White/Caucasian male. The evening had been a birthday celebration, but as the bus carrying 40 to 50 young people pulled into the parking lot of the AMC theater on Bishop Avenue around 1:30 a.m., a simmering dispute between two groups of men escalated into a chaotic and violent confrontation. Witnesses reported that an argument that had been brewing on the bus between "east side" and "west side" groups, believed to have rival gang affiliations, spilled out into the parking lot.
As the passengers disembarked, a physical fight erupted. In the midst of the turmoil, gunshots rang out, striking Robles in the chest. Family members later shared that they were told he had been attempting to act as a peacemaker during the altercation when he was fatally wounded. Police arrived to a frantic scene, and Robles was rushed to Regions Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The aspiring local rapper, known as "Billy Tha Kidd," was just six credits shy of finishing his high school diploma and was remembered by his mother as a friend to everyone who did not judge others.
The investigation that followed led to the arrests of several teenagers. Authorities identified 17-year-old Trashaun N. Morris as the individual who fired the fatal shot. According to the charges, Morris, who was associated with an "east side" gang, had allegedly been aiming for a member of the rival group but struck Robles instead. Morris was charged as an adult with second-degree murder and other offenses. He eventually pleaded guilty to second-degree murder without intent and was sentenced to over 10 years in prison.
Several other young men faced legal consequences for their roles in the deadly brawl. Maurice Martin and Samson Chu, both 16 at the time, pleaded guilty to first-degree riot. Another teenager, 18-year-old Taishawn Smith, was also sentenced for his involvement in the riot. While the primary shooter was brought to justice, the event left a lasting scar on the community and a family grieving the senseless loss of a young life caught in the crossfire of a violent dispute.
