On the evening of February 26, 2021, a violent confrontation in a rural Minnesota home cut short the life of 42-year-old Devon Lon Remmel, a White/Caucasian male from Grove City. The Meeker County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a shooting at a residence in Acton Township at approximately 10:42 p.m. Upon arrival, deputies discovered Remmel outside the home, suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite their efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
An autopsy later confirmed that Remmel died from a gunshot wound to the head.
The investigation that followed swiftly led authorities to two suspects from Hutchinson, both 23 years old at the time. The incident reportedly began over a dispute concerning a cocaine transaction inside the residence. During the argument, one of the suspects, identified as Byron Jackson, allegedly assaulted Remmel's brother, resulting in a broken arm and a dislocated shoulder. As the two suspects attempted to leave, their vehicle was blocked by a truck driven by Devon Remmel.
The confrontation spilled outside, where the argument continued. It was during this altercation that the second suspect, Christian Brown, is accused of fatally shooting Remmel. One witness reported hearing Brown say, "I have to find my brass," before the two men fled the scene after recovering the spent casing.
Within days, the investigation led to the arrests of both suspects. On Sunday, following the shooting, authorities executed a search warrant in Hutchinson and apprehended Byron Jackson. The next day, a SWAT team arrested Christian Brown, who was identified as the alleged shooter. Brown was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree assault. Jackson faced charges of first-degree assault and two counts of second-degree assault for his role in the incident.
