She had driven to Minneapolis from her home in Lindstrom to be a spectator at a street racing event. The gathering took place in the area of North Second Street and North 22nd Avenue, where a large group of people had convened to watch the illegal races.
Sometime around 1:30 a.m., while Vanessa was with her cousins, chaos erupted as gunfire broke out. In the ensuing panic, people scattered, seeking cover. Vanessa was struck by stray bullets. Her cousins, realizing she was injured, rushed her to a nearby hospital. Despite their efforts, Vanessa succumbed to her injuries, dying as they arrived at the hospital.
The incident was part of a violent night in Minneapolis, with another individual also losing their life in a separate shooting at another street racing event just minutes later. Law enforcement officials noted a significant increase in illegal street racing and the associated violence in the months leading up to the tragic event.
In the aftermath, Vanessa's family and friends remembered her as a vibrant and beloved young woman. They, along with community activists, have made public pleas for anyone with information to come forward. To date, however, the case remains unsolved. No suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting that ended Vanessa Jensen's life.
