On the evening of June 16, 2021, Paris Tracie Love, a 32-year-old Black male from Minneapolis, was fatally shot outside a business on the 1700 block of East Lake Street. The incident occurred at approximately 6:10 p.m. when a vehicle pulled up, and an individual exited, firing multiple rounds at Love before getting back into the car and fleeing the scene.
A Minneapolis police sergeant in the vicinity of Cedar Avenue and East Lake Street heard the gunshots and responded to the scene where they found Love with gunshot wounds. Despite officers providing medical aid and CPR, he was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics shortly after they arrived at 6:17 p.m. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner later confirmed that Love died of multiple gunshot wounds and ruled the manner of death a homicide.
Minneapolis police believed the shooting was not a random act and that it was a planned attack by someone who likely knew the victim. Investigators stated they had leads on the suspect and the vehicle they drove. The investigation was handled by MPD homicide investigators and the department's crime lab, in conjunction with the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office.
On June 23, 2021, police arrested Deandre Freeman, a 34-year-old man from Brooklyn Park, in connection with the fatal shooting. He was spotted driving the vehicle involved in the shooting, which had been reported stolen, on Dunwoody Boulevard. Freeman was subsequently charged in Hennepin County District Court with second-degree intentional murder. According to the criminal complaint, Freeman got out of a vehicle, walked up to Love, and shot him multiple times in the neck and back before driving away. The complaint did not specify a motive for the shooting.
