Glenn Danen Smith, a 27-year-old man from Minneapolis, was fatally shot on August 16, 2021, in the parking lot of Ted's Recreation, a bar located on Larpenteur Avenue in St. Paul, Minnesota. The incident occurred shortly after midnight, around 12:45 a.m., when police received multiple reports of shots fired near the intersection of Lexington Parkway and Larpenteur Avenue.
Upon arrival, officers discovered Smith in a vehicle in the parking lot, where he was pronounced dead by paramedics.
The investigation revealed that Smith, along with Kenwan Deshawn Hunter, 29, and another man, had been drinking at the bar earlier that night. At some point, the group went outside, and a physical altercation ensued between Smith and the other man. Smith's friend, who had come to pick him up, attempted to intervene but was prevented from doing so. After the fight, Smith got into his friend's Buick and demanded something from Hunter, which a witness identified as a gun. As the Buick began to back up, gunshots were fired, and Smith was struck. Witnesses reported seeing Hunter standing near the back of the parking lot at the time of the shooting.
Kenwan Deshawn Hunter was later charged with second-degree unintentional murder while committing a felony and illegal firearm possession. He was acquitted of second-degree intentional homicide. During the trial, it was revealed that officers found four 9 mm casings inside the Buick and one outside it, along with a trail of twelve. 45-caliber casings near the southwest corner of the bar. Hunter, who goes by the street name 'Big Show,' was sentenced to 22 years in prison for the murder of Glenn Danen Smith and an additional five years for illegal firearm possession. The sentences are to be served concurrently, and Hunter received 575 days of credit for time served.
