On October 16, 2021, Skylar Cody Hunter, 31, from Brookston, MN, was found dead along with his father, Jamie Allen Hunter, 51, from Moose Lake. The incident occurred in Culver Township, where Skylar and his roommate, Cody Wayne Pirila, 31, resided on Eklund Road. The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office identified Cody Pirila as the suspect in this tragic event.
The sequence of events began when Cody Pirila's father called 911, concerned about his son.
Upon arriving at the scene, Pirila's father discovered one of the victims outside the residence. Deputies later found the second victim inside. Shortly after, Minnesota State Patrol troopers spotted a vehicle leaving the area and attempted to stop it. The driver, identified as Cody Pirila, led officers on a brief chase. During the pursuit, Pirila called 911, confessed to the killings, and expressed his intention to end his own life.
The chase concluded near Big Lake Road and Twin Lakes Drive, where law enforcement managed to stop Pirila's vehicle. Upon stopping, Pirila shot himself and died at the scene. The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office confirmed that no other suspects were involved in the incident, and the case was classified as a murder-suicide.
