Jamie Allen Hunter, aged 51, passed away on October 16, 2021, in Brookston, Minnesota. He was born on May 6, 1970, in Plymouth, Indiana. Jamie was a resident of Moose Lake, Minnesota, at the time of his death. He was preceded in death by his son, Skylar Hunter, and his parents, Dale and Alice Hunter. Jamie is survived by his wife, Tara Hunter, and their son, Blaize Hunter.
The tragic incident occurred in Culver Township, where Jamie Hunter and his son, Skylar Cody Hunter, aged 31, were
found deceased. The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office identified the suspect as Cody Wayne Pirila, aged 31. According to the authorities, Pirila was a roommate of Skylar Hunter. On the morning of October 16, 2021, Pirila's father called 911 to request a welfare check on his son, who lived with Skylar Hunter on Eklund Road, north of Brookston.
Upon arrival, Pirila's father discovered one of the victims outside the residence. Deputies later found the second victim. Shortly after, Minnesota State Patrol troopers spotted a vehicle leaving the area and attempted to pull it over. The driver, identified as Cody Pirila, led officers on a brief pursuit. During the chase, Pirila reportedly called 911, confessed to the killings, and indicated his intention to commit suicide. The pursuit ended near Big Lake Road and Twin Lakes Drive, where Pirila's vehicle went into a ditch. Upon stopping, Pirila shot himself and died at the scene.
No arrests were made as the suspect, Cody Wayne Pirila, died by suicide following the incident. The case was classified as a murder-suicide by the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office.
