In the summer of 2018, on June 20th, the life of 21-year-old Tyjuan Maurice Campbell, a Black male also known as Leroy Maurice Brunk Jr., was tragically cut short in Parsons, Kansas. He was discovered deceased inside an apartment at 2612 Kimball Avenue, launching a homicide investigation by the Parsons Police Department and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
The investigation into Campbell's death revealed a story of a drug deal that spiraled into deadly violence.
The events unfolded within the Mendota Creek apartment complex, where an altercation broke out. During this confrontation, Raymond A.A. Rigazio, a 29-year-old from Parsons, shot Campbell twice, with one bullet striking his spine and another his buttocks. After the shooting, Rigazio fled the scene but was later located and taken into custody by law enforcement.
Ultimately, Rigazio was brought to justice for his role in Campbell's death. He pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter, a plea that acknowledged he had killed Campbell while committing a lawful act in an unlawful manner. He also entered a no-contest plea to a charge of aggravated assault. As a result of a plea agreement, Rigazio was sentenced to a controlling five-year prison term for the killing. This sentence was to be served consecutively with a 42-month sentence he received for a separate drug distribution case that came to light after authorities found a significant amount of marijuana and a handgun at his residence in an earlier incident.
