In the spring of 2020, the life of 28-year-old Jonathan Martinez was tragically cut short in Arkansas City, Kansas. On the afternoon of April 3rd, police responded to reports of gunfire in the 700 block of North B Street. By the time officers arrived, the individuals involved had already departed the scene.
A short time later, a vehicle was stopped on the U.S. 77 Bypass, and inside, officers found Martinez suffering from a gunshot wound to his abdomen. He was first transported to South Central Kansas Medical Center by the Arkansas City Fire-EMS Department before being airlifted to a hospital in Wichita. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Jonathan "Johnny Boy" Martinez passed away from his injuries.
The investigation quickly identified a suspect, 37-year-old Christopher Robert Henry of Wichita. Authorities indicated that Henry and Martinez were acquainted and that the incident was not a random act of violence or a case of "road rage". A warrant was issued for Henry's arrest, and law enforcement, believing he had fled to the Wichita area, sought public assistance in locating him, cautioning that he should be considered armed and dangerous.
On April 7, 2020, Christopher Robert Henry turned himself in to the Arkansas City Police Department. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of intentional second-degree murder and criminal discharge of a firearm at an occupied vehicle. Henry was booked into the Cowley County Jail with a bond set at $500,000.
