On the evening of March 18, 2022, a dispute inside Towne East Square mall in Wichita, Kansas, tragically cut short the life of 14-year-old Trenjvious Hutton. The young man was inside the mall around 5:30 p.m. when a physical altercation broke out between him and several other individuals. The fight, which reportedly stemmed from an ongoing disagreement, quickly escalated with devastating consequences.
During the confrontation, one of the juveniles involved produced a handgun and fired multiple shots. Hutton was struck by the gunfire and, despite the prompt arrival of emergency responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The sound of gunshots sent waves of panic throughout Wichita's largest mall, causing shoppers and employees to flee for safety or hide. In the chaos that ensued, witnesses were able to provide police with a description of the shooter. Arriving officers quickly located and arrested a 16-year-old suspect, identified as Te'bryis Robinson, in the vicinity of the mall. A 17-year-old who was with Robinson was also taken into custody for questioning but was later released. Investigators recovered two handguns in the course of their investigation.
Initially arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder, the charges against Robinson were later elevated. The Sedgwick County District Attorney's office announced that the teenager would be tried as an adult for first-degree murder and criminal use of a weapon. In a subsequent court proceeding, Robinson pleaded no contest to second-degree murder. However, in September 2024, at what was scheduled to be his sentencing hearing, he informed the judge of his wish to withdraw his plea. Later reports indicate he was sentenced to 255 months in prison, during which a brawl erupted in the courtroom between the families of the victim and the accused.
Family and former teachers remembered Trenjvious as a charismatic and athletic young man who was full of life. His sister described him as a social butterfly who loved to dance, rap, and play basketball. A former teacher fondly recalled him as a 'light in the classroom' who exuded confidence and had a bright smile that could light up a room. He was just weeks shy of his 15th birthday.
