In the early morning hours of July 18, 2005, a report of a shooting sent officers to the 100 block of Wayne Place in Southeast Washington, D.C. There, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was identified as Rodney Dixon, a 55-year-old male from Southeast, D.C. He was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

For more than 18 years, the shooting remained a painful memory and a cold case. Then, on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, Rodney Dixon succumbed to the injuries he sustained nearly two decades earlier. Following his death, an autopsy was conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the State of Maryland. The examination determined that the cause of death was complications from the gunshot injuries he suffered in 2005. Consequently, the manner of his death was officially ruled a homicide.
