On a summer evening in Washington, D.C., a gathering of friends at a barbecue on Fairlawn Avenue was shattered by the sound of gunfire. When the chaos subsided, 38-year-old Daniel Shelton Parker lay on the ground, having been shot multiple times. The attack was sudden and brutal, leaving Parker with so many entry and exit wounds that the medical examiner could not determine the exact number. Responding officers found a pistol in the waistband of Parker's pants.
He was pronounced dead at the scene on July 26, 2017.
The investigation into the homicide led police to a suspect, DeWayne Shorter Jr., who was arrested a month after the shooting and charged with first-degree murder while armed. Prosecutors built a case arguing that the murder was an act of retaliation, alleging that Parker had shot Shorter a few months prior to his death. During the trial, Parker's brother testified that he saw Shorter at the scene and that Shorter had made an incriminating statement to him. Another witness claimed Parker had told them that if anything were to happen to him, 'Lil Wayne,' a nickname believed to be Shorter's, would be responsible.
Despite the testimony, the prosecution's case faced challenges. There was no DNA evidence linking Shorter to the crime. The defense attorney argued that the case was built on falsehoods, centering their argument on the credibility of the witnesses. An eyewitness, a neighbor, testified to seeing someone with a long firearm leaving the area of the shooting but stated that he knew Shorter and it was not him. After a trial that included the testimony of 24 witnesses and two days of jury deliberations, DeWayne Shorter was found not guilty on all counts in December 2021, after having been detained for over four years.
