In the early afternoon of March 21, 2020, the life of 38-year-old Damaris Lindsey of Washington D.C. was tragically cut short. At approximately 12:20 p.m., patrol officers responded to a report of a shooting on northbound Interstate 295, near the exit for eastbound Route 50 in Cheverly, Maryland. Upon arrival, they discovered Lindsey inside a van that had collided with a guardrail. He was in the driver's seat, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Emergency services transported him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The investigation into the shooting revealed that this was not a random act of violence, but rather that Lindsey was specifically targeted. Through their investigative work, homicide detectives were able to identify two suspects in the fatal shooting. In June 2020, authorities announced the arrests of 18-year-old Javelle McClary and 25-year-old Davonte Brothers, both from Southeast, Washington D.C.
Both McClary and Brothers were charged with first and second-degree murder, as well as other related charges. Following his arrest, McClary was held at the Department of Corrections on a no-bond status. Brothers was taken into custody in Washington D.C. and awaited extradition to Prince George's County to face the charges against him. The arrests brought a measure of progress in a case that had left a family and community mourning the loss of a man described as a devoted father who was deeply loved.
