On a Tuesday afternoon in January 2021, a young man's life was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire. Twenty-two-year-old Dewayne Shorter, III, a resident of Temple Hills, Maryland, was found inside a vehicle in the 1200 block of Saratoga Avenue, Northeast, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The incident, which occurred around 2:51 p.m. on January 26th, actually began in the 1300 block of Brentwood Road, Northeast. Despite the quick response of D.C.
Fire and Emergency Medical Services, Shorter showed no signs of life and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was a father to a young son.
The investigation into the homicide led detectives to identify a suspect. On April 6, 2021, 36-year-old Jonathan Young of Northeast, D.C., was arrested by the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder while armed. The Metropolitan Police Department had sought the public's help in locating Young prior to his arrest.
In a turn of events, Jonathan Young accepted a plea deal on December 21, 2022, pleading guilty to the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. During the sentencing hearing on March 23, 2023, emotional statements were read by Shorter's mother, sister, and the mother of his child, who all urged the judge to impose the maximum sentence of 16 years. The defense argued for a shorter sentence, highlighting that Young had turned himself in and shown remorse. Ultimately, the judge sentenced Jonathan Young to 160 months, just over 13 years, in prison. In addition to his prison term, Young is required to register as a gun offender, undergo random drug testing, and will be on supervised release for five years following his incarceration.
