In the late hours of a Saturday night in the nation's capital, a life was tragically cut short. Nicolas Hawkins, a 29-year-old man from Greenbelt, Maryland, was in the 600 block of O Street, Northwest on March 13, 2021. It was there, at approximately 10:43 p.m., that the sounds of gunshots pierced the night, drawing the attention of the Metropolitan Police Department's Third District.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered Hawkins on the sidewalk, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services were quick to respond and transported him to a local hospital. Despite their life-saving efforts, Nicolas Hawkins succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The initial investigation sought the public's help in gathering information about the fatal shooting.
Months later, the investigation led to a significant development. On Tuesday, November 23, 2021, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force located and arrested a suspect. Twenty-six-year-old Anthony Whitted of Northeast, D.C. was taken into custody pursuant to a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant. He was subsequently charged with Second Degree Murder while Armed for his role in the death of Nicolas Hawkins. The case against Whitted progressed through the justice system, and he ultimately pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter while armed.
