On the evening of October 23, 2021, a dispute at a BP gas station in Washington, D.C. escalated into a fatal encounter for 23-year-old Juwan Michael Smith. The young man, a resident of Southeast, D.C., was at the gas station located in the 2800 block of Alabama Avenue, Southeast, when a verbal altercation broke out between him and another individual. The argument intensified, tragically culminating in gunfire.
First responders were dispatched to the scene at approximately 8:13 p.m.
following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered Smith unconscious and suffering from a gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to a local hospital for emergency medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Juwan Michael Smith succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, officers from the Metropolitan Police Department apprehended a suspect near the scene. The individual was identified as 24-year-old Javon Duckwilder, also a resident of Southeast, D.C. Duckwilder was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder while armed in connection with Smith's death. Investigators determined that the shooting stemmed from the verbal dispute between the two men.
Further investigation into Javon Duckwilder revealed his connection to another homicide. He was also charged with the murder of 23-year-old Alexander Nwogu, which had occurred in October of the previous year. In the case of Juwan Smith's death, Duckwilder eventually accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter while armed.
