On a warm summer night in Las Vegas, a party's celebratory atmosphere was shattered by a single act of violence that ended the life of 20-year-old Morland Antwon Richey-Elder, a Black male. The fatal encounter occurred on July 28, 2014, at a house that had been rented for the occasion at 8813 Barium Rock Ave., near Iron Mountain Road and North El Capitan Way. Dozens of people were in attendance at the spacious home when the tragic events unfolded.

Earlier in the evening, Richey-Elder had left the party but returned shortly before 12:30 a.m. Minutes after his return, shots rang out near the driveway. Richey-Elder was struck in the neck at what police described as nearly point-blank range. Despite his grave injury, he managed to run into the backyard before collapsing. Fellow partygoers attempted to help, carrying him to a car, but he succumbed to his wound at the scene.

In the aftermath, Metro Police launched an investigation into the homicide. Authorities have indicated that they identified persons of interest, some of whom have been involved in other criminal activities since the shooting. However, a lack of cooperation from the nearly 80 guests at the party has stalled the investigation. Without independent witness accounts, law enforcement has been unable to make any arrests in the case. Detectives believe the shooting may have stemmed from a trivial argument that escalated with deadly speed. They have asserted that while Richey-Elder himself did not have gang affiliations, several individuals present at the party did.

Years after the shooting, Morland Richey-Elder's family continues to seek justice. His mother, Jacqueline Elder, has made public pleas for witnesses to come forward, expressing the family's inability to move on without closure. The case remains unsolved, a painful reminder of a young life cut short and a community's silence in the face of tragedy.
