In the early morning hours of July 29, 2014, the life of 51-year-old Jesse Vigil came to a violent end on a sidewalk in Henderson, Nevada. The fatal encounter began with a routine traffic stop. An officer observed Vigil riding his bicycle against a red light at the intersection of Horizon Drive and Boulder Highway and initiated a stop in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven.
Initially, Vigil was uncooperative, providing a false name before eventually identifying himself as Jesse Vigil.
A records check revealed a history of violent crimes and weapons possession, prompting the officers to conduct a pat-down search. During the search, a folding knife was found and removed. However, as officers attempted to take him into custody for his traffic infractions and based on his history, a struggle ensued. Vigil managed to break free and grab a second knife that was attached to his bicycle.
In the ensuing chaos, Vigil stabbed one of the officers, Fergus Baxter, in the hip and thigh. Both Officer Baxter and the other officer on the scene, Charles Hedrick, then drew their weapons and fired at Vigil. He was struck by multiple bullets and died at the scene. An autopsy later confirmed that his cause of death was gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen, and also revealed the presence of a high level of methamphetamine in his system.
The two officers involved in the shooting were placed on paid administrative leave, a standard procedure in such cases, while the Henderson Police Department investigated the incident. A subsequent review by the Clark County District Attorney's Office, which included an examination of the evidence and witness statements, concluded that the officers' actions were legally justified. It was also revealed during the investigation that Vigil was the primary suspect in a fatal stabbing that had occurred the previous year. No arrests were made in connection with Vigil's death, as it was determined to be a justifiable homicide by law enforcement officers in the line of duty.
