On a warm evening in Las Vegas, a sense of foreboding weighed heavily on Maria Blanca Hernandez. That feeling became a devastating reality on the night of September 21, 2014, when her 16-year-old son, Jose Uel Hernandez, a Hispanic male, was senselessly killed in a shooting. Jose, who had been brought to the United States from El Salvador by his mother to escape violence, found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time in a city he now called home.
That night, Jose was a passenger in
a Honda sedan driven by his 17-year-old cousin. They had just finished dinner with an uncle and two others and were on their way to drop Jose off at a gym. While stopped at a red light at the intersection of Sahara Avenue and Decatur Boulevard, another vehicle carrying four men pulled up alongside them. One of the men in the other car made what appeared to be a gang-related hand gesture and questioned the occupants of the Honda about their affiliation.
Without any provocation, at least one individual in the adjacent car began shooting at the Honda. Jose, who was looking away from the other car and talking to his cousin, was struck by the gunfire. According to his family and the police, Jose had no involvement in any gang activities. After the shooting, his cousin, realizing Jose was wounded and slumped in his seat, drove to a relative's house nearby. Emergency services were called, and arriving units found Jose in the driveway with multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to University Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Jose's murder remains open, and Metro Police have described the shooting as a random act of violence. Despite the passage of time, no arrests have been made in the case, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The perpetrators who cut short a young life full of promise are still at large, leaving a family to grapple with a loss that is as profound as it is unresolved.
