In the late afternoon of January 28, 2016, a dispute in a North Las Vegas apartment complex tragically escalated, ending the life of 18-year-old Kishawn Washington, a Black male. The fatal encounter occurred around 4:30 p.m. in the 3300 block of Civic Center Drive, near Cheyenne Avenue. An altercation, which began as a verbal argument, soon spiraled into a physical fight, culminating in gunfire.
Responding to reports of the shooting, North Las Vegas police officers arrived to find
Washington suffering from a gunshot wound to his chest. He was rushed to University Medical Center, but his injury proved fatal, and he was pronounced deceased. Investigators quickly determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence, suggesting a prior connection between Washington and his assailant.
The investigation led police to identify 35-year-old Tyrus Kemp as the suspect in Washington's death. Nearly a month after the shooting, on February 26, 2016, authorities located and apprehended Kemp in the Detroit area. He was taken into custody on a warrant for murder with a deadly weapon. Following his arrest, Kemp awaited extradition back to North Las Vegas to face the charges related to the death of Kishawn Washington.
