A vibrant and ambitious 32-year-old Asian American woman, Michelle Vo, found her life tragically cut short on the night of October 1, 2017, in Las Vegas, Nevada. A graduate of the University of California, Davis, and a successful agent for New York Life Insurance Company in the Los Angeles area, she was known for her bubbly personality and infectious smile. Vo, who had recently developed a fondness for country music, had traveled alone to attend the Route 91 Harvest festival, her very first.

On the final night of the festival, just hours before the tragedy, Vo met Kody Robertson, a 32-year-old from Ohio. The two quickly bonded over a shared love of golf and conversation, enjoying the concert together near the front of the stage. As country music star Jason Aldean performed, the festive atmosphere was shattered by the sound of rapid gunfire. In the ensuing chaos, Vo was struck by a bullet. Robertson, who was standing beside her, shielded her with his own body before carrying her out of the line of fire with the help of another man. They administered CPR and loaded her onto a truck to be taken to a hospital. Robertson stayed by her side, promising her family he would find her after being separated in the pandemonium. He spent the night going from hospital to hospital, eventually learning that she had succumbed to her injuries.

The perpetrator of the massacre was identified as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, a resident of Mesquite, Nevada. From his suite on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel, Paddock fired more than 1,000 rounds into the crowd of approximately 22,000 concertgoers. The attack, which lasted for about ten minutes, resulted in the deaths of 58 people that night, with the death toll later rising. Hundreds more were injured.

Authorities found Paddock deceased in his hotel room from a self-inflicted gunshot wound when they breached the door. He acted alone, and an extensive investigation by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the FBI concluded there was no conspiracy and no affiliation with any terrorist groups. Despite thorough investigation into his background, finances, and mental health, a clear motive for the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history was never determined. As Paddock was the sole suspect and took his own life, no arrests were made in connection with the shooting.
