On the evening of October 1, 2017, Andrea Lee Anna Castilla, a 28-year-old White/Caucasian woman from Huntington Beach, California, was in Las Vegas celebrating her birthday. She was attending the Route 91 Harvest music festival, an open-air country music event, with her boyfriend, sister, and her sister's fiancé. The celebratory atmosphere was shattered when a gunman opened fire on the crowd of approximately 22,000 people from a hotel room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and
Casino.
During the chaos, as headliner Jason Aldean was performing, Andrea was struck in the head by a bullet. Her loved ones heroically carried her through the panicked crowd, scaling a fence to escape the direct line of fire. They managed to get her into the back of a passing truck that was transporting victims to the hospital. Despite their desperate efforts, Andrea succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The perpetrator of the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history was identified as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock of Mesquite, Nevada. Paddock had meticulously planned the attack, amassing an arsenal of firearms in his hotel suite. He fired more than 1,000 rounds into the concertgoers below, killing 60 people and injuring hundreds more. As law enforcement officers closed in on his hotel room, Paddock took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Consequently, there were no arrests made in connection with the massacre.
