In the cool evening of November 5, 2017, the life of a 33-year-old Black/African American man, Keith Washington, was tragically cut short in Las Vegas, Nevada. Just after 8 p.m. in the central part of the valley, Washington was standing alone at the corner of Karen Avenue and Sherwood Street. The moments that followed were sudden and violent, forever altering the quiet of the neighborhood and leaving a case that continues to puzzle investigators.
A vehicle pulled to a stop on Sherwood
Street, and an individual emerged from the driver's side. This person walked toward Washington and, without any publicly known motive, fired a series of shots. Washington was struck multiple times. As quickly as the assailant appeared, they were gone, fleeing the scene by heading east on Karen Avenue before police could arrive. The sound of gunfire gave way to the approaching sirens as emergency responders rushed to the 2600 block of Sherwood Street.
First responders found Washington gravely wounded. He was immediately transported to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, but the injuries he sustained were too severe, and he was pronounced dead. The Clark County coroner's office would later confirm his death as a homicide, one of many that year in the county. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department launched an investigation into the fatal shooting, piecing together the events of that night.
