LaTosha Juane White, a 50-year-old Black male, was a seasoned security officer with a reputation for kindness and leadership. On the morning of December 30, 2017, he was on duty at the Arizona Charlie's Decatur hotel and casino in Las Vegas. A call came in for a routine disturbance on the fourth floor, and White, along with his colleague Phillip Albert Archuleta, responded.
Upon arriving at the hotel room, they encountered 29-year-old Christopher Olague.
An argument ensued, and Olague opened fire, tragically killing both White and Archuleta. The armed security officer did not have a chance to draw their weapon. Following the shooting, Olague fled the hotel, initiating a desperate attempt to escape.
Olague ran into a nearby residential neighborhood, where he tried unsuccessfully to carjack two different vehicles. He then jumped a wall into a backyard and attempted to force his way into a home. As police closed in on his location, Olague entered the laundry room of a house and shot himself in the head. He was transported to a local hospital with a non-survivable wound. Investigators later revealed that Olague had a criminal history in Utah. The motive for the initial disturbance and the subsequent fatal shootings remains unclear, but authorities confirmed it was an isolated incident and not related to terrorism.
