In the spring of 2018, the life of 22-year-old Hispanic male, Aaron Rivera, was cut short in a Las Vegas apartment. The events of that late March night unfolded within the Woodhaven Apartments, located near Decatur Boulevard and Twain Avenue, leaving a scene of violence that concluded a troubled relationship.
On the evening of March 26, 2018, sounds of a heated argument were heard coming from the bedroom Aaron shared with his 21-year-old wife, Jennifer Yanez.
A roommate who was present in the apartment at the time recalled hearing the couple fighting. Later, the distinct sound of gunshots pierced the night air, a noise the roommate initially dismissed. The gravity of the situation became apparent when the other roommate returned home after 1 a.m. Unable to get a response from behind the closed bedroom door, he peered through a window and discovered a horrifying scene.
Inside, both Aaron Rivera and Jennifer Yanez were on the floor, bleeding from gunshot wounds to the head. Aaron was pronounced dead at the scene, his death later ruled a homicide by the coroner's office. Yanez was found with a pulse and transported to University Medical Center in critical condition.
Investigations by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department revealed a history of domestic turmoil between the couple. Family and roommates recounted past arguments, including a previous incident where Yanez had reportedly struck Aaron with a vacuum cleaner. Evidence within the bedroom, such as a broken mirror, pointed to a physical struggle preceding the gunshots. According to police reports, a roommate heard Aaron's pleas of "no, no, no," just before the shots were fired.
While recovering from her self-inflicted injuries, Jennifer Yanez admitted to detectives that she had shot her husband during an argument before turning the gun on herself. Subsequently, she was charged with murder with a deadly weapon.
