Paula Davis, a 19-year-old UNLV student, was tragically found dead on September 6, 2019, in Las Vegas, NV. Her body was discovered by her father in the family's van parked near Desert Horizons Park on Simmons Street and Gowan Road. According to the Clark County Coroner's report, Davis died from two gunshot wounds to the back of the head. The investigation revealed that Davis had recently broken up with her ex-boyfriend, Giovanni Ruiz, who was 21 years old at the time.
Giovanni Ruiz was
identified as the primary suspect in the case. Evidence presented to a grand jury indicated that Ruiz had premeditated the killing of Davis. Surveillance footage showed Ruiz's truck parked near Davis's home on the morning of her death. Shortly after Davis sent a text message to Ruiz ending their relationship, she was seen leaving her home in her van and pulling up next to Ruiz's truck. It is believed that Ruiz shot Davis while they were sitting in the truck, then moved her body to the van and drove it to the park where it was later found.
Further evidence against Ruiz included a gun missing two rounds found at his home, with a receipt showing it was purchased two days before the killing. Additionally, Ruiz was seen buying bleach, water, trash bags, and paper towels at a Walmart, suggesting an attempt to clean up the crime scene. Ruiz was arrested and charged with murder with a deadly weapon. He later pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to life in prison. During his court appearance, Ruiz expressed remorse for his actions and apologized to Davis's family.
