In the early evening of January 8, 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the relative quiet of the Harbor Island Apartments on East Harmon Avenue in Las Vegas. When the chaos subsided, two men were left gravely wounded. One of them was Sean Maurice McLemore, a 32-year-old Black/African American male. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, but his life could not be saved.
The second victim, 30-year-old Antwan LaRaye Pope Jr., was pronounced dead at the scene from a gunshot wound to the head.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department detectives began an investigation into the double homicide, piecing together the events that led to the deadly encounter. They learned that McLemore and Pope had been involved in an altercation with another man at the apartment complex. According to witnesses, the argument escalated, and the unidentified man produced a handgun, firing multiple shots at both men before fleeing in a vehicle. An initial description of the suspect was released: a Black male, approximately 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighing around 210 pounds, with long hair.
Following anonymous tips, the investigation soon focused on 39-year-old Michael Ellis, a resident of the same apartment complex. Surveillance footage placed Ellis at the scene around the time of the shooting. Further investigation suggested a possible motive, with reports indicating that McLemore allegedly owed Ellis drugs and money, and the two had been in a physical altercation days before the fatal shooting. Based on this evidence, Michael Ellis was arrested and charged with two counts of open murder with a deadly weapon.
In February 2022, Michael Ellis stood trial for the murders of Sean McLemore and Antwan Pope Jr. The prosecution's case hinged heavily on the testimony of a single eyewitness who identified Ellis as the shooter. However, the defense team challenged the credibility of this testimony, pointing out inconsistencies to the jury. They also emphasized the lack of physical evidence directly connecting their client to the crime. After two hours of deliberation, the jury returned a verdict of not guilty, acquitting Ellis of all charges. As of the latest available information, no other suspects have been identified or arrested in connection with the deaths, leaving the case unresolved.
