In a tragic and brutal series of events, Roy Jaggers, a 27-year-old White/Caucasian male, was killed on August 1, 2021. His body was discovered at the bottom of Cathedral Canyon, a remote former tourist attraction near Pahrump, Nevada. The investigation into his death revealed a horrifying story of abduction and torture rooted in a false accusation.
The ordeal began when Heather Pate, 27, and her boyfriend, Kevin Dent, 36, accused Jaggers of harming one of Pate's children.
Jaggers was a neighbor who occasionally babysat for Pate. Believing the unsubstantiated claim, Pate and Dent lured Jaggers to Pate's Las Vegas apartment, where they beat him. The violence that began in the apartment was recorded, and disturbingly, Pate's children were seen entering the room during the assault.
Following the initial attack, Pate and Dent drove Jaggers to a desert area in Nye County. There, they met Pate's ex-boyfriend, Brad Mehn, 37. Over several hours, the trio subjected Jaggers to unimaginable torture, using a variety of weapons that included knives, a blowtorch, a baton, and an axe. After the prolonged torture, they drove him to Cathedral Canyon. There, he was stripped naked and forced to walk off a cliff. Although he survived the fall, Mehn then shot him multiple times with a shotgun, ultimately causing his death.
Law enforcement quickly identified the suspects, and within 36 hours of the discovery of Jaggers' body, Pate, Dent, and Mehn were arrested. In the subsequent legal proceedings, Pate and Dent entered into plea agreements. Pate pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping, while Dent pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. Both testified against Mehn, who was convicted of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon and kidnapping with a deadly weapon. Mehn was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Pate was sentenced to life with the possibility of parole after 15 years, and Dent was sentenced to life with the possibility of parole after 10 years. Prosecutors stated that they found no evidence to support the allegation that Jaggers had harmed Pate's child.
