On a summer afternoon in Henderson, Nevada, a heated argument tragically escalated, leading to the death of 30-year-old Mario Hunt, a Black male. The events of August 16, 2021, began with a dispute between Hunt and a 28-year-old woman named Lucretia Smith inside a residence on Chelsea Drive. The conflict spilled out into the front yard, where it turned into a physical altercation.
Witnesses intervened and separated the two, at which point Hunt began to walk away.
However, the confrontation was far from over. Smith got into a Jeep SUV, drove after Hunt, and then exited the vehicle armed with a handgun. Surveillance footage captured Smith chasing Hunt and raising the weapon.
According to police reports, Smith later claimed she only intended to "pistol-whip" Hunt. However, as she swung the firearm, it discharged, striking Hunt in the forehead. He fell to the ground, and Smith fled the scene in the Jeep. Mario Hunt was transported to Sunrise Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The cause of death was confirmed to be a gunshot wound to the head.
The day after the shooting, detectives located the Jeep and, after a traffic stop, arrested Lucretia Smith on suspicion of open murder. During a search of a residence associated with Smith, police discovered a 9mm handgun hidden between mattresses. In her interview with authorities, Smith confessed to the shooting but maintained that the gun had gone off accidentally during her attempt to strike Hunt. She was booked into the Henderson Detention Center and held without bail.
