On a summer evening in Las Vegas on August 17, 2021, a violent encounter on a pedestrian bridge cut short the life of 22-year-old Juan Llamas. That day, a group of teenagers had gathered near Douglas A. Selby Park to drink beer. An altercation broke out between the teens and Llamas, who was believed to be homeless. The initial fight escalated, and as Llamas attempted to get away, he was chased by the group onto the pedestrian bridge that connects to the park.
As Llamas fled, one of the
teenagers opened fire, striking him. The group of assailants then fled the scene in two separate cars. Llamas was rushed to University Medical Center, but he succumbed to a gunshot wound to the head. The Clark County coroner's office officially ruled his death a homicide.
Investigators from the Metropolitan Police Department quickly launched an investigation. A neighbor provided crucial video evidence that showed the initial fight and the chase onto the bridge. While the shooting itself was not captured on camera, the footage showed the group running from the bridge moments after the fatal shot was fired. The video also helped police identify the two vehicles the suspects used to flee: a silver four-door car and a blue Chevrolet Monte Carlo.
Within a short time, Las Vegas city marshals located and stopped the Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Two 17-year-olds, Gabriel Campos and Carlito Amaya, were inside and were arrested. The investigation continued, leading to the identification and arrest of two more suspects: 18-year-old Dilan Sosa-Gonzalez and 19-year-old Rodrigo Flores. Police discovered that the silver car seen leaving the scene matched Flores' Ford Focus. All four teenagers were subsequently indicted on charges of murder and conspiracy. Court records show that all four pleaded guilty to the charges.
